The Okavango Delta is unique in the fact that it is an inland delta unable to reach the sea. The incredible journey of this water source starts one thousand kilometres away in Angola where the Kavango river flows towards Botswana and is joined by the Cuito River just before it enters the Caprivi and flows over the Popa Falls, flowing down the Panhandle in the northern reaches of Botswana. It reaches the sands of the Kalahari Desert where it spreads, forming the delta, becoming a mass of waterways and marshes and creating a myriad of palm studded islands and lagoons amassed with water lilys and rimmed with swaying papyrus.

The combination of water and seemingly endless islands of vegetation create and ecosystem that abounds in bird life and game.

There are many lodges throughout the delta and in the surrounding areas some with more water based experiences while others are more land based 4x4 game drive experiences although many combine the two. The largest game reserve in Botswana, it covers 52,800km². This vast thirst land is one of the most unspoilt parks of Southern Africa and one of the remotest. With little more than 100 to 200mm of rainfall a year its Flora and fauna struggles daily for survival through the dry season.

Surprising to many, once the rains come in the summer months, the Kalahari is one of Botswana's prime game regions with thousands of Springbok, Gemsbok, Wildebeest and ensuing predators close behind.

During the dry months of winter, this region makes for an excellent contrast on a safari that incorporates surrounding areas such as the Okavango Delta, Chobe, or Kwando regions.

The Kalahari is a different experience with its ancient Bushman culture, the call of the Black Backed Jackal and the barking Geckos at night, or the never ceasing call of the Black Korhaan by day.

Chobe National Park is the second largest in Botswana covering some 11000km² in the Northeast corner. It has some of the largest game concentrations in Southern Africa.

The Chobe River is renowned as the premier location on the continent for watching game by boat where once can experience the spectacle of game in large numbers coming to drink and bathe, on many occasions crossing the river in front of your boat. An experience not to be missed as they cross onto the vast flood plains of the Chobe and Zambezi Rivers, also a magnet for migratory birds after the seasonal floods have subsided.
